Don’t you know that diet has two versions??
The short version and the long version.
The short version:
1. Eat more fruit and veg
2. Be more active
3. Drink more water!
The long version:
1. Eat regular meals at least three per day. This will prevent you from becoming too hungry and over eating later, don't snack between meals.
2. Make sure your diet is made up mainly from fruit, vegetables and fiber rich foods like bread and pasta. These are filling, low in fat and good for you!
3. Use low fat substitutes for dairy products wherever possible, for example, skimmed milk, low fat cheese, cottage cheese and yoghurt.
4. Get used to taking your tea and coffee with skimmed milk and no sugar.
5. Do not be fooled by low fat biscuits and cakes, or you might eat the whole packet! Instead, allow yourself to a small portion of the full fat version, and savor it!
6. Don't eat large, heavy meals last thing at night or your body won't have chance to burn off those calories.
7. Make sure you have a healthy breakfast to kick start your metabolism.
8. Avoid frying food; instead use the grill which lets fat drip off the food.
9. Soak excess fat from food before serving on absorbent kitchen paper.
10. Replace desserts with fruit to satisfy the craving for something sweet.
11. Drink plenty of water and low calorie drinks to help you feel full.
12. Make yourself more active, climb stairs and walk all short journeys.
13. Do an exercise class or take up a sport, not only does this burn up calories but you'll feel better and look more toned.
14. Choose the lower fat options when in restaurants; avoid fried foods and rich sauces.
15. Avoid using butter on bread, potatoes etc. If you must, use a small amount of margarine.
16. Don't drink sugary drinks and beware of the hidden calories in alcohol.
17. Don't be too hard on yourself, aim to lose weight slowly and to create a healthy balanced diet that you can happily live with and it will stay off for good! Allow yourself treats occasionally or you may end up bingeing.
If it’s hard for you to do hard exercise for your body, try this:
1. Simple rule number one, always take the stairs, avoid lifts and escalators. And if you have to go up a lot of floors get off a couple early, there’s always a compromise!
2. Park the car/bike a little further away from work or shops, even if you only take the space at the far end of the park lot.
3. When watching the TV, try to do something active, get the Hoover out or do a little dusting, or even try to forget the remote control, get up and change it yourself.
4. Go out and walk, cycle, or even night socializing on your feet. Anything active! (But if your socializing watch out for any extra drinking!)
5. Why not consider “walking breaks” instead of coffee breaks at work? This will get your body moving during the day, and wake you up.
6. If possible, ride your bike to work once or twice a week, or if that’s not practical, try driving most of the way, park somewhere safe and cycle the rest.
7. Play with your little brother/sister. Even better, make a commitment to take them out to the park, you’ll soon tire them out and you’ll get some great exercise too!
8. Cut the grass, do some weeding in the garden, and wash the car/motorbike instead of taking it to the car wash, you’ll soon burn off extra calories.
9. Do some stretches, or sit ups while watching TV, try to do a few during the adverts, you’ll soon build up to a respectable level.
